The Borough of East Newark in Hudson County, New Jersey, is seeking a qualified and experienced individual to serve as the Director of Public Safety. This is a highly responsible and visible position, serving as the chief executive officer of the East Newark Police Department. The Director of Public Safety oversees all police operations, ensuring the safety and security of the community by implementing paradigms, procedures, and practices that encourage community engagement and the implementation of modern policing practices. The East Newark Police Department’s Uniformed Officer in Charge reports directly to the Director of Public Safety for the efficient, effective, and professional delivery of police services to the community.
Key Responsibilities
The Borough of East Newark Mayor and Police Committee expect the Director of Public Safety to:
- Provide strategic leadership and direction to the East Newark Police Department.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures for efficient and effective police operations.
- Foster a positive and inclusive work environment, promoting professional development and high morale among officers and staff.
- Oversee daily police operations, including patrol, investigations, community policing, and emergency response.
- Act as a liaison to the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office and NJ Office of the Attorney General.
- Interact with the leaders of other Hudson County law enforcement entities.
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
- Manage the department’s budget, resources, and personnel to maximize efficiency and effectiveness.
- Implement community policing strategies to build and maintain strong relationships with community members, local organizations, and other stakeholders.
- Integrate technology and innovative approaches to enhance public safety and crime prevention.
- Ensure proper training and preparedness for officers in emergency situations.
- Develop and implement programs to address crime prevention, traffic safety, and other public safety concerns.
Qualifications
- Demonstrate leadership and management skills, with experience at the supervisory and command level. This will include a minimum of 20 years of progressively responsible supervisory experience and a minimum of three (3) years of executive-level experience (Deputy Chief, Chief, or Director of Public Safety).
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of modern policing concepts, community engagement, and crime prevention strategies.
- Exhibit excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups and individuals.
Salary and Work Schedule
- Salary: $95,000 per year.
- Work Schedule: The Director of Public Safety must work a minimum of 24 hours per week on-site in Borough Hall, as well having an on-call availability 24/7 for guidance and emergencies. This is a salaried position, and the Director is not eligible for overtime or compensation time under any circumstances.
- The Director of Public Safety will receive 20 vacation days per year and 10 sick days per year.
- The Director of Public Safety will not be eligible for pension or health benefits.
